Ministry of Education and Child Care-Approval of Replacement for Carson Elementary School
The Ministry of Education and Child Care (“MECC) has announced that funding of up to $61.2 million has been approved to replace and expand Carson Elementary School (“Carson”). The new school will have an increased capacity of 195 seats for a total of 390 seats and will include an expanded gym and a neighbourhood learning centre.
The new school will be located in the Carson flats area of the subdivision, allowing the school to remain in the current neighbourhood. In 2022, government provided 2.1 million for the district to purchase the site where the new school will be located. Construction of the new school is expected to begin in Spring 2024 and is anticipated to be completed for students by Fall 2025.
A safety assessment determined that Carson should be replaced after a landslide in 2021. As a short-term solution, the district relocated four classes to portables on the south field of the school.
“The Quesnel Board of Education would like to thank the Ministry of Education and Child Care for the significant investment and the building of a new Carson Elementary School,” said Tony Goulet, Board Chairperson. “We look forward to working with the ministry in the development a new facility that will benefit the students and families of Carson and the community as a whole. The landslide has presented challenging times for students and families of Carson; however, a new facility will provide stability and certainty for these families that we are grateful for.”
The Board of Education is pleased to have received this announcement and wishes to thank Minister of Education and Child Care Rachna Singh as well as Ministry staff for their support in the replacement of Carson.
